Wealthy, charming Raj meets working-class beauty Simran on a train, he's instantly smitten. She feels the same, but she's betrothed to another man. Raj isn't about to give up, so he follows Simran from London to India to win her over.

There are some films which, when you watch them the first time, don't really grab you. It seems an ok film, nothing too thrilling, possibly the odd moment that was rather good but not as gripping as some of the director or star's other work.

Then, for whatever reason, you watch it again (in my case, a friend wanted to see it). And gradually, you start to notice the depths and subtle details and, before you realise what has happened, it is one of your favourite films. This is one of those films. We have all known the three lads in the film. Sameer (Saif Ali Khan at his very best) is a total sweetie, always falling in love with bossy girlfriends who automatically dislike his friends and trample over him. Only Aamir Khan could make the devilish Akash, the incorrigible one secretly terrified of emotion, likable so that no matter how atrocious his behaviour, you still want him to win his beautiful Shalini (a shining Preity Zinta).

And then there is the quiet one, Sid (Akshaye Khanna), so deeply thoughtful and mature. We laugh and cry with these three best friends as they tease each other, support each other, quarrel, fall out with each other and fall in love. Farhan Akhtar, as a first-time director, draws some of the best and most believable performances of their careers from his cast. Dimple Kapadia in particular is pitch-perfect as the tragic and alcoholic Tara.

The writing is spot on - if you didn't know these lads, you were one - and every reviewer has had their favourite moment (for me, it's the scene in the metro station, late at night, when the train doors close, trapping Akash on board and leaving Shalini stranded alone on the platform). All in all, this film is a beautifully crafted reminder of what it feels like to be young. So buy this film because you need to watch it at least 3 times.

And once you have done that, I guarantee you'll want to watch it many times more. This is a great heartwarming life-affirming film with a host of India's finest actors - Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta and Sonali Konali in particular.

The film lasts for three hours but never seems to drag for a moment as we switch repeatedly between three love stories and the writers and the director play with our emotions like a full-string orchestra. No one is able to develop a character more during the length of a movie than Aamir Khan and he doesn't disappoint in this - but it only works because of the way the gorgeous Preity Zinta plays off him.

There are some magnificent scenes in the film - too many to list - but my favourites were a retrostyle music piece with Saif Ali and Sonali, who looks beautiful in 70s styling, and a scene set at the Sydney Opera House where we also get the tale of Troilus and Cressida as a bonus in the movie. For the travelphiles amongst you, there are some great shots of Australia and Goa.
